the only reason why VTEC is popular is because Honda was one of the first companies to use it in their economy cars.. EVERY company has their own version of VTEC.. they have similar ideas but different ways to phase cams and timing depending on many variables.. i.e. Toyota has VVTL-i, BMW has VANOS, Dogde i think has Ecotec or someshit, anyhow you get the point.. so YA ITS OVER RATED~! (note*: vtec or anything similar is better than "nonvtec" cars.)

The concept of VTEC maybe over rated, but I personally dont think other companies can put this technology to use like honda does. Who else makes engines that efficient and puts it to the right use? Prime example would have to be the F20c.
well I until a bought an RSX type S, I had never driven a car with VTEC and didnt think it was that big a deal, but now after owning a car with VTEC...its the shit

the concept behind VTEC and all other vaiants of it is excellent
smooth fuel efficient low end
strong high rev power
and as far as other companies technology being better or worse i would have to say BMW has the best setup out there with the VANOS and double VANOS systems

continuously variable cam adjustment? yes please! 
bmw owns. anyhow, depending on your application, there is a point where vtec can be pointless, but for the average, above average and so on person, vtec is the way to go.

I dont think its better, but just how well does i-vtec compare to vanos or double vanos?
The originally question was between a honda D15 non-VTEC and a VTEC engine, not between diffrent manufactures versions of VTEC.
You can only really compare BMW, Honda , toyotas versions of VTEC if you've driven those cars, but my guess is that they are all very good.
My understanding is that iVTEC gives you a better TQ curve then VTEC, the RSX has a relitively flat TQ curve similar to BMW.

i used to think vtec was overrated when i had my all motor ZC.
but, now in driving a ex, which will soon be replaced by a sir2 b16....
i kinda like it. it sounds cool when you hit it, just like the overused phrase in the
automotive press suggests....VTEC SCREAMER
i can only imagine what my b16 will sound like when its fully built, turbo-charged
and im racing some domestic down the street and hit the almighty vtec......
music to my ears. thats MY kill song.

Over the turbo's spooling and blowing noises, you can no longer HEAR VTEC unless you count the tires being blown off in the first three gears when the car finally hits VTEC from a roll.
VTEC is VASTLY overrated by riceboys, some commercialisms, and the media. They make it seem like if you "hit VTEC" the engine grows an additional CLONED bank of cylinders, and a b16a car suddenly acts like a B32a with 32 valves, and 4 cams. No. It just opens up the valves a little more, and makes a little more intake and exhaust noise. No big deal. THEN comes 8000 rpm, where those extra 3 milimeters really start to matter...

It's even better when it's the guy's girlfriend whipping her head around, going "WTF?".
It's actually happened to me, a guy in a (slow) white Audi 1.8T got the shit whipped out of him. I had a shitty launch, so he was a nose ahead of me, but when Vi-TeCH kicked in at 5200 rpm, his gf turned toward me (I was on his right side) with this surprised look on her face. Needless to say, he never caught up, until he did a riceboy flyby at 100 mph long after I shut it down.

when i had the non vtec sohc f22 in my wagon this one day i was tearin around town letting the dual magnaflows go. when i stopped at the ice cream stand and popped the hood cus i thought the intake came loose. these three kids came over (2 have riced civics) and they were like "yo, is that dohc?" to play wit em i'm like "what's that?" they laugh act all cool and in his best know it all voice one says "dual overhead cam" i just couldn't take it i busted up cus you could see my single cam gear just sittin out in the open for all to see it was hilarious
