there was far too much freedom on the internet... what it really needed in order to truly thrive was more government

agreed, but i understand the plight of sites like netflix. it shouldn't cost the provider more. they should bill the user (customers) for pulling it through them.`

ahh yes poor little Netflix

ah, well, didn't look here before posting my thread. i usually forget this place exists.

but, im still not convinced either way. it will be tied up in appeals and lawsuits for a while before anything actually happens though. maybe somewhere in there will be a compromise.

Earthlink has got to be the worst of the worst. terrible billing practices, terrible customer service, oh and the billing for services not even in contract is my favorite.

Frontier taking over from their purchase of ATT. I do not know of anyone whose speed did not decrease and bill whose did not go up.

This is probably the best thing for the consumer. The majority of most current internet service providers are oligopolies and they've done everything they can to keep other companies from coming to market. An example is the court battles going on for Municipal Broadband. Basically the best thing for the consumer user. While I am not a large fan of government regulation, I feel its in the people's best interest now. Because fuck Comcast and Time Warner.

But this then comes into play, should this eventually become a public utility? Taxes, infrastructure? Beaurocracy? I'm not a slippery slope fan so don't start with that bs discussion.

i have a feeling E was being sarcastic lol.

Fuck Comcast. shit should stay they way it is now. everyone pays the same to access unlimited amounts of whatever the fuck you want with no throttling of select traffic (within your speed tier).

I was agreeing with his sarcasm. :)

it's a bit like double dipping.

As much as netflix uses, let's face it, the safe bet is porn streams use more bandwitdh overall.

earthlink has never been busted for changing the billing name of a customer to "cunt". not the worst.

Earth Link merged with MindSpring in 2000, but still continued to sell services in areas until 08-09. I worked with them a lot up here until 09.

earthlink is still around? haven't heard that name since i got aol on a floppy
This is what I was going to say..

Oh ya, and fuck Comcast. Fuck ATT Uverse while we're at it too.

I have nearly cut the cord. I got a broadband package from Astound which is 110mb/30mb down/up. They said I could get $20 off for including basic cable and free hd/dvr and free 2nd hd box. Basic cable was $20. Basically got my local channels with HD for free, which is good since I don't have good reception to Sutro Tower in SF because of the damn east bay hills. :(

Raspbmc + Kodi + Genesis are my new best friends.

We loaded up a kodi box with a few dozen movies and shows. We hardly ever turn it on in favor of Netflix :/

Well I celebrated the vote by canceling my Charter Cable TV this morning. We will see how it plays out but the double dipping with Netflix does hurt consumers. I figure it will be finalized in 2-5 years

I have an antenna (abc, cbs, nbc, fox, and grit-tv) I have netflix, share a hulu, and download or stream everything else. The only thing I miss is sportscenter, which i can stream if i really wanted to.
