Just got this phone call...

Me: well what we're gonna try now is changing some settings... Open up the OEM.CFG file, scroll down to RS232 Port = 4... See it?
Him: Yup.
Me: Erase the 4, and change it to 0.
Him: Call me insane, but I don't have a Backspace key on this laptop
Me:
Him: I don't see a backspace key anywhere
Me: uhhh... nothign that says BKSP or anything?
Him: Nope... Nothing
Me: What about an arrow pointing to the left, located in the top right corner of the keyboard?
Him: yeah, I have one of those
Me: Try that.
Him: Yup, that worked.
Me:   :ufucktard: :wtf: :whatafucktard: :bash: :slap:

holy shit, at least hes trying to understand computers i guess.

That's worse than you using Linux for over a year and not knowing what a terminal was :p

This laptop is something that 99.9% of the work is all GUI based... Only on rare occassions does an end user need to go into a config file like I had him do... I dont even know HOW the settings got changed so he needed to go in there...

And for those that say "RS232, WTF!?!?" Its a serial communication between our mailing equipment that we manufacture and the custom HP Print heads that we use to print on envelopes.

rs232 is a serial protocol. its nothing special :p

i bet this is the same guy who calls in and asks where the "any key" is.

him: "it says press any key to continue. I don't have an any key"

lol

reminds me of the calls people get at the cell phone support hotline...

...my phone is broken.

*what exactly is wrong with it?

...it won't make or receive calls, nothing at all.

*well, let me see if i can locate you... hold just a moment

...even with the antenna up, it doesn't have signal

*uhm, let's see... did you turn it on?

...you mean it has to be ON to do all that?!

you wouldn't believe how many people are idiots... verizon actually has a flowchart of questions for troubleshooting common problems with their phones, and the first question is: is the phone powered on?

DUH... But who uses RS232 anymore? Everything is RJ45, USB, or IEEE1394. Some of the newbs might not have recognized RS232.

Hell, we even use RS422 & RS485 as well... Now THAT is something you don't hear much about... ;)
