RETIRED
talk me out of it. lol

dell has a $508 instant savings right now. i just can't beat it anywhere.

preface: my laptop is 2 years old now, and my video card keeps overheating and shutting me down. its REAL annoying now and its driving me nuts.
i cleaned it and removed all the crap i could find and its still not running good.

it probably needs a format.... but i just have way too much shit on here to even think about it... mostly work related. not easy file copies... but built in shit like VPN tunnels. So, i need a slow migration so i don't have down time from work.... and eventually, i'll migrate my laptop into my home theatre or some shit.... or maybe even format it and sell it (its still a decent machine... 17" widescreen and stuff).

anyway, so i was looking around, and dell has this deal.

this price includes vista ultimate, office 2007 standard, acrobat writer, and a 24" ultrasharp widescreen monitor.

so, should i do it?

should i get a dell?

i'm the #1 hater of dell. but i just can't touch that price elsewhere.

2 yr warranty.... in 2 years, i'll probably be looking to upgrade anyway (pretty much how i am right now, 2 years later on my laptop)

the monitor, vista, and office alone are a G from newegg, so its a decent machine with a good video card (i'm no gamer...), 2 yr warranty, shipping, 2gb ram, core2 proc, and all set up and ready to go for me for 1100 bucks basically.

thoughts?

i hate to admit that i totally got a dell in 2004 and i'm still using it w/no problems to report today. i say go for it with the savings..

i hate my laptop, but at a $500 discount...even i couldnt pass that up.

if you're at all into IBM/Lenovo let me know, i get employee discount. i hear they have refurbished T42s for $450...and the new stuff is usually $400+ off the list price (but again, we're talking $tinkpads..). what can i say though, the things are fucking tanks. my dell is my desktop; i'll never stray from an ibm stinkpad..but dell's displays *are* nice...

thanks for the offer, but i'm not really interested in ibm's. i had one back in the day, and while it made a great paper weight, it's not what i'm after

and while it made a great paper weight, it's not what i'm after

i know what u mean...built like fucking (heavy) tanks, and hard to schlep around. just have never had one go bad on me in 10 years. not very stylish or sleek..

I have had my previous dell replaced.... it was a 5500 inspiron. They replaced it with a 9300 and it still runs smooth to this day. I will have it for 2 years in November. Go for it :) If you want... I can look up my promo codes for work to help you out. I will check today.

wait before you buy it, let me get on the computer at work and let me see if I can get that covered with my work's discount...might save a few hundred more.

that is an old school ball mouse
make sure you switch it to the "Dell Optical Mouse" for the laser one

You could trim that down even more by replacing the 8800gts w/8600 for $150 less. Then get a less powerful power supply that should trim off about $30-40. Also, can get some HP RAM that is 10 a piece after rebate, so thatd be another $28. Could probably save on case if you want something less expensive for another $30 or so. Also trim down the hard drive for a 320gb model for around $40 less.

Probably dont have time to build your own though, but just a comparison. The system i just put together would make the Dell system look like an eMachine.

add office (need it for work) and adobe writer, and you're well over my dell price.

and why did you pick 32 bit? why not 64 bit?

I think you can get office for like 75 with a student discount and theres plenty of them here that could help you out there. As for adobe, thats probably the single most expensive thing int he whole system except for monitor, but with the suggested cuts, itd be almost enough to get it.

Or you can go the chinese way and save by obtaining the software via other methods.

And as 32 vs 64 no real significant gains except if u were running 4gb ram. it hasnt matured all too much and some other hardware/software may not like to play with it. but its the same price, so whatever.

i'm not a student, so that doesn't work for me....
and since this machine is for work, i try to keep my "Chinese" software to a bare minimum.
