ever since i did my swap, my valve cover ground wire has not been hooked up. How important is this? my vtec is not operating properly, but the car is driving fine. does that make this ground wire at all neccesary?

exactly, if it came from the factory like that, why take it off. i'm sure honda didnt put it there for the hell of it. your vtec may not be working because of a bad ground. make sure that on one side of the vtec oil pressure sensor goes to a GOOD GROUND. and the other to the specified pin in the ecu.
