Shift Linkage Removal ?

I have a 92 civic dx that im trying to take the shift linkage off from at the tranny. I took out the 12mm bolt and one of the linkages came off, but the other one has me baffled. I dont see a nut, bolt or anyway to remove it.

Anyone know how?

Yup! You've come up against the "BITCH PIN"

Aptly named, as its a bitch to remove. Its a circle of metal that is pressed into place under a metal "C" shaped clamp that is snapped onto the linkage at the transmission. Remove the C shaped clamp (pull back the rubber boot, its under there) just yank it off.. Next, get a drift-punch (flat, not pointed) the size of the pin (not too big, not too small, if you dont have one, go buy one) put the punch up to the pin and hammer it out. (3-5lb hammer reccomended) This requires that you scream, curse, smash at least two fingers, and drive yourself to the edge of sanity.. then and only then will it release its satanic hold. Drive it all the way out and the linkage will fall off.

Alrighty then, thanks for your quick response. Although im not too excited now at least I know what I have to do. Any ideas on where to get a drift-punch, maybe someplace like napa or home depot?

Screw hammering it out. I got a pneumatic hammer that runs off on my air compressor. It made very short work of the bitch pin. Home depot and Lowes have a package deal right now on air compressors for around $320. I got a pretty decent sized compressor, impact gun, air wratchet, air hammer, grease gun, and paint sprayer. Its one hell of a deal, and if you work on cars alot, its a sweet investment!!

Yeah, air tools rock, I take just about everything apart with them, but I always put them back together by hand.

Air hammer would be awesome on the pin if you could find a bit that will do it.. where the hell do you get a drift for an air hammer that is like 1/4"?

I have a tapered bit that was able to push the pin about halfway out. Then, I took a short bolt, secured it in the hole with some tape so that i didn't have to hold it with my fingers, and pounded the rest of the pin out. I am thinking about taking the bit to the machine shop at my work and milling the rest away so it will work better

I can officially vouche for not using anything too big.... I got a screw stick...... I cant get it out now..... LUCKLY THOUGH ITS THE SHIFT LINKAGE I DONT NEED TO SAVE so mr. bitch arm is ganna meet mr. hacksaw tomarrow, but I will still need to punch that pin out of my SiR clip. can anyone give me the rough idea for the size I need? I really dont wanna have to buy new shift linkage cause I do something stupid again.

i've always pulled my motors out with the linkage on so that removal of the pin would be easier while it's out of the car. I have a drill key that is the perfect size for it that i always use. If not.. get yourself an 8mm punch and knock it out

Well ive already got it back out, and now back in as well. I need some helping with some of the smaller water lines coming off the pipe, I made another thread with pics if anyone wants to check it out it would be appreciated.
