New key stuck in ignition switch. Wont turn.

So I had a duplicate made from my old honda key today. I stuck the key in the ignition, and turned to start the car. Good. But when I went to turn it back, It wouldnt. For a while, the car was stuck running. Wiggling the key and working it around got it as far as accessory, but I still cant get the key back any further or out. Any suggestions?

sounds like they left a burr on the key or something... i know this probably isnt what you want to hear, but keep jiggling the key... be careful with it though and dont twist the fuck out of it... you do not want to break the key off in the ignition... try pushing and pulling the key gently while you jiggle it and try to lightly twist it to the off position

you could try something like silicone lubricant spray but dont go ape shit with it... just spray a small amount in there and keep working the key

also try - white lithium grease. and try pushing the key in and out while jiggling it. The teeth in the ign are prob worn, & being that the key has new teeth & are not lining up, even tho the new and old key may look the same when u line up both keys

Update:

I still haven't got the key out. I've tried for hours jiggling it and rocking the key and all sorts of other weird motions, but no luck. Im going to have to get a new ignition switch.

try to get the place that cut the key to fix and pay for repairs its a long shot but worth a try

Does it turn at all?

They make lithium grease in a spray can that has a tube like WD40. You may be able to squirt it in there and work it back and forth.

You could also try talking real nice to the car and rubbing the dash while turning the key.

I have the same problem with mine. What resolves the problem = disconnect the negative terminal on the battery.
But be careful, I just wasted my battery by doing it too much.

I wish I could even begin to tell you what was causing it and what could fix it, but I still have yet to find out what it is. The only advice I have received is that their is probably a short in the wiring harness in the steering column that connects to the key tumbler. That's and $80 fix at AutoZone, and that was also a diagnosis on a bust Saturday morning after a 30 conversation of me explaining it to the guy, so.....

But it sounds correct since once I disconnected the battery, it popped right out.

this is kind of a long shot cuz its a weeek old but take the plastics around the colum and there is two skrews holding the electrical portion of the key switch take that apart maybe there is were its messed up.

Apparently you need a specific type of key for Honda ignitions; they are very "picky". I was warned of this when I went to get a key cut, so I didnt even try.

dude if you still havent got it out. just buy a new ignition lock with new keys. i used to do the lock cylinders when i worked in the dealerships. its a bitch inside those things. they have thin flat plates inside then that act as tumblers. they sometimes stick together or get bent slightly and jam up against each other. and i've had customers call telling me they cant turn their car off or get their key out. they bring in their cars with the same problem youre having. when we get the ignition lock out we've never gotten the key free even then. buy a new one dude

On my 1998 CRV 5 speed manual, my key was stuck too...The key ignition did not want to go to the off position and was mostly stuck in the acc position, It was very difficult to turn off the key, like it was sticky, and like I could break the key off if I forced it...It had nothing to do with Park, Neutral...I just used Zoom Spout turbine oil; I lubed it, moved it around and got it feeling good, and it came, out. thanks for the tip, klyph...

I'm not sure how the original problem got resolved, but I've got the same problem. It isn't a dealer made duplicate key though, I didn't know it had to be and the guy making the key didn't say anything about it! So I tried disconnecting the battery - didn't work. Held the real key up to the ignition and it allowed the bad key to start the car, but not enough to get it out of the ignition. It is still flashing the green key light on the dashboard because it is thinks the car is being stolen. Great anti-theft device, but might be an expensive and stupid mistake on my part. Hopefully a locksmith can take care of it instead of an expensive dealer repair or replacement. Of course it's Sunday so I won't know until tomorrow.
