I was thinking of putting a turbo on my Del Sol SI. I need to rebuild the motor anyways. I was more so curious if I could KEEP the power steering AND the A/C. Will it work? What kind of fabrication (if any) would be necessary to fix this? Thanks

Yes you can keep the Power Steering AND AC...you just need to get a AC friendly turbo manifold for the D-series. As far as good or bad...depends..how much are you wanting to boost? You will have to run a Intercooler, Chipped ECU (or FMU) upgrade the fuel injectors, turbo, BOV, Oil line kit, Boost gauge, EGT gauge, Walbro fuel pump thats about it..might be some more but thats the jist of it....search around on turbod16.com if you have more questions...

i was looking to boost only about 6-10 psi. nothin to major. just to have a little bit more power. thank you for the site. i will check into it. i was just curious if i could keep the a/c and power steering. i just did not want to give those up if i didnt have to. thanks

You also know your going to have to upgrade to premium unleaded gas. my friend put exact thing a turbonetics stage 2 on his D16Z6 and with in a month had destroyed his turbo. he called the company for a refund and was denied because he didn't use a 93 octane gasoline

I know it is probably going to sounds stupid, but why exactly will I need to run 93 octane gas if I run a turbo on my car? I'm new to this so i figure the only way to find out is to ask.

Sorry it took so long to reply. I was out of town. But anyways after my friend had called turbonetics he took it to a mechanic. the mechanic said that because unleaded doest burn as cleanly as premium that it fried the turbo. But He said that even if he did use premium he would have had to completely rebuild the motor so it could run on premium but thats if you use stage 2 or higher also consult the manufacture before u buy a turbo you can get turbos that dont require premium gas. But other than that i dont know.

well that works....thanks for the input...i found a gas station around here that sells minimum 89 octane gas....for the same price as all the others sell 87....lol....and i have noticed i get better gas mileage and it does run better now.....or maybe its just in my mind....but ah well......at least i think it made a difference

The good thing about boosting a D-series is, if you blow it up, you're only out $500 and some labor.

close, but not quite. the octane rating i.e.- 87, 89, 91, etc, has to do with the additives in the fuel which do keep your engine cleaner but that isnt the reason you have to run high octane when you go boost. the octane is also the gasolines resistance to knock, the higher the number the less chance the engine will start knocking. and since you are new to this, if you hear your engine knocking you might as well get ready to kiss that baby goodbye, engine knock is detonation. detonation will kill an engine faster than almost anything. typically when you blow an engine its because of detonation. also you dont have to rebuild an engine so it can run premium, that is one of the dumbest things i have ever heard, i think its time you found yourself a new auto tech...

Hey man thats what i thought but one my problems is im from the north living the deep south. Buts thats what i thought i asked the tech if that was necessary. and he was like i went to school for this so i let go it was my friends chose anyway. but he did get more horses out of it when he had it rebuilt for premium.

i got some news for you. he didnt "rebuild it for premium" he just rebuilt it. when you rebuild an engine, unless it just came from the factory, it is going to get an increase in power.

The lesson. Even if you don't do the work yourself you should spend the time learning about it so you know what's being done and what's not being done.
