    this is probably a dumb suggestion but did you try to start it with the clutch pedal pressed fully down ? i had that exact problem on a honda cbr600 motorbike and it turned out that because the engine was worn the compression was a bit low, so the new clutch slowed the cranking speed enough...

    96 Accord Starter Issue

    solenoid its a guess from experience but........... sounds like a starter solenoid problem to me, (if honda use them on thier starters) i very much doubt you would need to shim the starter motor, and if your sure its 100% right positionwise and your flywheel teeth are ok all the way round...

    No more check engine light..buuuut

    in that situation id try using exhaust paste on the sealing surfaces, but if there is too much of a gap and vibes that wont last long. you can also cut up an exhaust bandage into a gasket shape and use that and exhaust paste, or try some high temperature silicone. hth
