How does everyone feel about the new 10k mile intervals for new vehicle oil changes?
I'm nearing the 5,000 mile mark on the new RAV and thinking about changing the oil myself if the dealer won't do it.
The car came with 20 or 25k in maintenance included but I don't really want to wait until 10k on the original oil, even if it is 0w-16 full synthetic.

Sidenote- Mobil1 now makes a 0w-16 full synthetic for Honda and Toyota.

Toyota will actually change the oil at any mileage if you have "hard driving conditions". It's in the documentation. I had my oil changed at 2,500 miles after driving from Austin to Seattle from when I went down to buy the truck.

I'd recommended having dealership services for as long as the warranty lasts, so for 36,000 miles. No reason to do it yourself if it's "free".

For the most part newer vehicles are fine with 10k change intervals.
This doesn't mean that you don't have to check the oil level once in a while.
If you are really curious there are places you can send samples to that will test the oil condition.

Yeah I would just go with the factory recommended interval. Thought it was odd as well but I always take mine to the dealership for service now. They document everything and I don't worry about it. Oddly enough they're normally cheaper than anywhere else as well. My days of crawling on the ground and changing oil or brakes are in the rearview mirror.

veloster is 3500, jetta is 5000. both "boast" 7500 and 10000 respectively.

its just not worth it in my opinion. oil is always cheaper than an engine or bearings.

What's all this about changing oil?

But seriously though, a guy I used to work with about ten years back leased a Grand Cherokee, drove it hard for three years, never changed the oil once.

I feel bad for whoever bought that thing...

love the oil change intervals on my Model S. :p

Wife's CX-5 is a lease, so we change it every 10k miles. She has put 15,000 miles over it in 3 years.. lol

Even 10 years ago, the M had an 8500 interval. it was some wierd 0w60 syntech and cost a boat load so i never did it earlier than that.

IMO, as long as you're running synthetic, it's ok. if you're going dino, i wouldn't go more than 4.

Always check the oil every couple thousand. Most cars have a "burn" amount and its in the guidelines that if its less than 1/2 quart ever 750 or so, they won't do shit. If you follow the 10K rule you'll be doing your engine serious harm. My buddy had this happen with his Acura last year.

I don't go more than 5K in my truck because well truck and sometimes hauling, etc. It uses a Synth Blend. They recommend about 7-8K.

Wife's old BMW we went between 8-10K. They'd call us when it was time to schedule an appointment. Car was under dealer service for the bulk of its life with us. And when we switched to an ISP, it was only 1 service a year.

Mobil 1 15k mile oil, Mobil 15k mile filter. It's what I run on the Prius and the interval I do. No issues yet.

    Blackstone Labs.

Our civic si went from 3000 to 5000 to 7500 to 10000 to 12000

Blackstone said oil looked good and would most likely make it to 14000 just fine. I was happy with 12000 and stopes there.

That was a highway car that racked up massive miles. Around 800 a week.

Bottom line unless you send the oil off to be checked to see if the additives are still doing their job you are just assuming.

Go ahead and change it and get it tested. You’ll have peace of mind for the next extended change.

Finally got a chance to take it in for the first service, about 5400 miles.
Rolled 5k that last week of tax season and didn't have a spare hour to visit the dealer.
Toyota corporate covers the 10k and 20k based on factory recommended 10k intervals.
My local dealer will cover the 5k and 15k because I bought the car there. They said I will be responsible for 25k and on.
Had an 11:45 appointment and they quoted me an hour. Was there about 11:37, a little early. Car was ready by 12:37, an hour later.
I told them not to move the seat, and they didn't move it. Also had tires rotated and they set me up for the "cabin air filter is in the yellow phase but doesn't need to be changed yet"...
I intend to have the oil tested before the next change.

    So here's an interesting experience.
I went to a Dave and Busters when I was in Myrtle beach last year. I still have the game card, I keep it in the car to scrape frost off the windshield. Stupid little card, says Space Invaders on it, no money on it, no cash value.
I have it sitting in the little area directly in front of the shifter, it's been there for 3 months as a paper weight on top of some napkins and a couple receipts. The area in front of the shifter is surrounded by plastic on 3 sides, and sunken in so nothing can "fall out" of that area.
On the ride home last night I noticed it was no longer there. Called the dealership (realizing I'm now "that guy") and ask them about the card. The service rep I worked with while I was there was not very pleasant, cut me off and said we don't take things from peoples cars, did you look by the seats or on the floor? No, I'm driving but I will. It's been sitting there for 3 months and never "fell" so unless you guys took my car off-roading I don't think it would have just moved on its own. Well sir I suggest you check when you get home. Ok, I'll look for it, it's just very weird because it has no value... and she cuts me off and says well it has no value to us either.

I checked around the seats, under the seats, in the center console, in the glovebox, on the floor, I ever removed the floor mats to see if somehow it got underneath one of them.

I've worked in a shop before. I am very well aware of the people that call and claim something is missing, or that such and such is now broken on their car when it was fine when it pulled in.
The whole thing just completely baffles me. Why would someone take a Dave and Busters card... I know it was there. This is why I hate dealerships.
There is no point in me calling them back, because I turn into some crazy guy calling us about a "missing" card that has no value.

Anyone ever have shit go missing from their cars?

yea, i'm usually that guy as well if I have to drop it somewhere, but this is why I usually do all my own maintenance.
    Lesson learned.

A dealership stole a set of metric+SAE sockets and a ratchet from me once. I had the car in for a clutch replacement.

Now I just leave a few $1 bills somewhere in the car, because the smart theiving technicians know that's a test.

In my RamCharger, Blackstone labs said I can stretch out the synthetic oil changes to 12k, so I'm going to let it ride for 10k. The other cars get changed when the computer says "change your oil." Sometimes it's as much as 14k.

I think you mean, "they safely confiscated and disposed of it because it was illegal and they were concerned about your well being".

Who am I kidding. I bet that shit got smoked before they even finished their shift that day. :lmao:
