Hello everyone:
A friend offered to give me his 1995 Accord vtec 2.2L 5 speed stick shift in alright condition. He was driving it to work everyday when the engine was destroyed (lost oil pressure and is making a huge banging noise I am told..I have not started the car and my friend will not allow me to start it on his property...the car did drive into his garage a few months ago, where it sits till today).
The car has been driven approximately 280k miles. The car has been in a few accidents but has been repaired and looks pretty much like any other 1995 Accord (the rear bumper has paint flaking, but other than that everything is alright). Is it worth it to purchase a new engine and possibly tranny (5 speed stick) for the car? I am getting it to save money (small engine and I drive about 100 miles daily).
The car has new pads, radiator, and tires, but needs rotors (I can change these in my garage). The interior is ok. No torn seats but stained and worn. Dash is good, etc. I will also have to reset the airbag controller at the dealership, which I am told is around $200 (he had an accident but never got that part replaced, but he did buy an airbag from ebay I believe).
I might purchase a tranny for it because my friend claims that 5th gear grits if he is not careful when changing the gear. Sounds like worn synchros but I am not sure.
I assume that the engine and tranny will be about $1200 after incidentals if I buy on ebay (who do you recommend that I deal with?) Because of my commute and work hours, the car must be reliable. I plan to do the swap in my garage.
I know that the popular thing to do would be to put an H22 in the body, but I am getting the car to save on gas, so unless the H22 will pay for itself in terms of higher efficiency, then I am not interested in going that route. Of course if you have reasonable ideas about how to increase mileage on this car then I am all ears. Performance is *not* a criteria in my decision making process.
Reliability and gas mileage with reasonable difficulty and cost in a swap are my only concerns (if I spend $2000 to save on gas then I have gone the wrong way).
What do you fine folks think? Take it or junk it? Any other thoughts other than to keep my posts shorter?
Thanks in advance for your thoughtful response,
Kevin
