97 ex making grinding noise

My friend bought a 97 hatch, 5 speed but whenever she accelerates it makes a grinding, or loud "whirring" noise, but it stops when she pushes the clutch. Somebody told her the throw out bearing but I thought that would make a noise when the clutch is pressed? Also the guy who sold it I actually talked to and he seemed honest and said he replaced the axles and put in a new clutch, and claims he has receipts. but why wouldn't he replace the throw out bearing if he replaced the clutch?

She's worried it's going to turn into a major issue, but as of right now it runs and drives just fine but the noise is annoying and she said today it seemed worse.

sounds like a throw out bearing, and it would make the noise while the clutch is released... not pressed in

That's what makes sense but I tried doing some research first and that's what I saw. Either way is this going to turn into something severe or just an annoyance. I never had this problem with my car and I have an eg hatch.
