Hey everyone, my civics tach gives out at 6k rpm's and bounces or goes to zero, the rest of my gauges work fine except that one, Im trying to stay with the stock tach Im not a fan of the aftermarket tachs. I checked the fuzes and connections to the instrument panel and all are in great condition. What gives??

could be a bad gauge or the dizzy might be trying to go out, so check that

Ijust installed a msd pro billet distributor kit so I dont think its the distributor. Is there any way to test the fact tach so I can pin point if its faulty?

you could go out and buy a little sun pro tach or whatever kind they sell at auto zone for like $30 and hook that up, unless you know someone thats got one you could use real quick

chances are its in the dizzy. i know you have a new msd one but it wouldnt be the first time msd sold a faulty part. dnt know why but msd works hell of great or has issues. i've gotten new msd ignition boxes that didnt work. we put a different msd box in and it worked...go figure huh... any ways you should put your old dizzy on and see if the problem goes away. if not then use a different good tach to test and see if it is your tach. i'll check to see if i have ant procedures for testing just the tach for you though. be back in a minute

damn i just seen it has been a while and you replaced the tach with the gauges...was it a new unit? probably wouldnt matter since you have the same problem. most likely the dizzy but i'll still double check

if not youll need to go to a dealer. testing this circuit will require a scope. these tools usually cost about 2 grand that i have heard of. mine was 3700 bucks. it would be cheaper for you to replace your dizzy, wire harnesses, gauge cluster and ecu at that cost. my money is still on the msd being faulty though or too strong for your ride. the tach drive circuit receives pulses from the ICM in the distributor assembly or the ECM/PCM. the solid-state tachometer then displays these pulses as engine speed. for each 200 pulses per minute from the ICM or the ECM/PCM the tachometer displays 100 RPM's.

check this out! mac tools has a scan tool for 150 bucks...i forgot the model but i just seen it today. this little thing has global communication technoligy, meaning it can communicate with asian import, domestic cars AND european import cars. the cool thing is, it has a live data feature. we tested it out today when my mac vendor was here. you plug it into the OBD2 port and go to the live data feature and run your car. there is a graph that displaysthe RPMs off the pulses from your dizzy...just like my high dollar scope. this will help you figure out what is causing your tach to malfunction and help you diagnose what is wrong with your tach. hope you find a mac vendor, or buy it online if you can. sorry i forgot the model number but it was the only one priced in that price range that can do all that

take your tach out and check to see if any of the little copper wires are broken. easy fix if they are.

it is possible that both tachs he has issues with both are sporting broken copper wires like youre talkin about. but did you see that this thread started last year then he changed his geuges this year and he still has the same problem?

I test drove a 00 Si with a bad VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) and the speedo would jump and sometimes the tach, see if you're throwing an engine code. Autozone checks for free anyways! =)

yep, i have an si trans, I have a bad vss. It does jump the speed when im driving but will drop back down to zero or to the speed im doing. Pull the plug off of the speed sensor and look closely and make sure all 3 prongs r there on the male side. The middle prong coroded and broke off in the female side of it. check for green coloring in the prongs. Look very closely.
Seems to be common with honda's in general.. let me know what happens..
