B16 Vtec help

I've just put crower cam gears on my b16 and now when i hit vtec it makes a crackling sound, if i slowly hit vtec in first it starts crackling and sounds like vtec or something is bogging down. I've checked timing and have done a compression test and everything is good there. I was just wondering what your guys two cents would be on something like this. Thanks

gears set at zero? are they tightened well? I'd check that first if that is the only thing you messed with.

I have the exhaust retarded to 1 degree like i had with my skunk2 cam gears. I had to get new cam gears b/c the skunk 2 were slipping. The new crowers are torqued down and so are the adjustment bolts.
