if you do a lot of gaming or downloading then go with cable (higher bandwith)
if you are just a basic intarweb user DSL is fine

We just got a new type of DSL here(6mbit IIRC); suppose to be a tad faster than cable...I'm switching over in like a week.

my parents had dsl, it sucked. It would be out for days at a time randomly. now, MY cable provider (comcast aka the worst provider on the planet) sucks. I have cable with them and while its fast.. its only fast when its working. It disconnects ALL THE DAMN TIME, i have to reset the modem/router about once a day minimum.. sometimes more.

But i'd get cable only because its pretty much the same price and its faster.

both have advantages and disadvantages. also the provider makes a big diffrence. I had verizon dsl and they were awsome I got everybit of bandwidth I payed for. My parents have a tiny local cable provider and internet traffic bogs it down quite often.

I've got comcast cable 6mbps down, 768kbps up. can't complain I usually see almost 8mbps down, the only time I can say that my service went down is due to a power outage

There is really only one noticeable difference between the two (as far as im concerned). Cable and DSL have gotten to the point now to where they have very similar speeds, but yes, in most cases, your porn will d/l faster on cable.

security is my big issue. cable you share the line with a couple dozen people and your packets can possibly be sniffed out by someone who has a basic understanding of how the cable internet system works. DSL on the other hand is a DEDICATED line that you dont share with anyone else. Pretty hard to sniff packets over DSL unless you dont have an encrypted wireless signal....then its your own fault.

    Both suck.

Between Comcast cable and Verizon DSL, I'll go with DSL. We have it at the office and it's not down at all that I can remember, well maybe once. With comcast at my apartments it'd go out randomly and stay out for hours.

I have Verizon FIOS 15mb down, 2 up.

FIOS > Cable > DSL as far as speed, depending on the packages. FIOS also has a 5mb package and a business/home package for 180 a month.

FIOS > DSL > Cable as far as reliability.

Not to mention the fact that FIOS is the only absolutely TRUE point to point connection between the Central Office and your home. Sure DSL runs over your phone line, but the bandwidth is nowhere near guaranteed. Get on Cable around 3:30 in the afternoon at home? Yeah, you're fucked now that all the kiddies are home and gettin on the net.

Not only is this my personal opinion, it's also what I've noticed from a professional standpoint. Constant frikken Cable outages which the customer will call us and complain even though it's comcast.

Then you have the straight shot T1 and T3 connections.

I love stealing that bandwidth when I'm driving around with my laptop. :D

On top of that, i think I'll vote DSL. You get a landline which is about 15 a month, and the DSL service is about 30 a month. You may not get the speeds of Cable, but you're paying about 20-30 less a month than you would with Comcast here for, IMO, better more reliable service.

    you can't afford a t1 or t3 :)

ideally, we would all have oc12's running to our homes, but paying 50 grand a month for internet is not in the budget :p

:withstupid: it's not something you should worry about. Local dialtone/broadband providers use T1s and channel banks to provide a cheaper alternative than several POTS lines for companies with 1 main number and 1 to 24 roll over numbers as well as a broadband internet connection.
