My 93 sol SI has 225k on the D16Z6 motor. Still runs great. If one's budget was $2,500 would you a) buy a b16a g2 motor and swap or b) build up the D16Z6? I don't want to go turbo...been there, I want simplicity. Thanks for the input.

gsr full swap for 2700 idn about that, if you are going all motor ditch the d series and pickup a b (k would be better but to much money). b16 is a great motor

B16 is decent, but without the torque of the B18C1 the increase in power will all be top end. Spend the cash and get a GSR swap. Ideally I'd have a B16 head on a GSR block.

heres the question...do you want to spend ALL of the 2500 on just the motor...or is this for the whole car???

jdm-online a gsr swap is 2800. ok so like 3100 shipped. but its still defiantly worth it to save up a little more and go with the gsr. you wont regret it. its a very fun motor

The $2500 is strickly for the motor/trans. portion of the car. I just wasn't sure if I should spend like 1k and redo my SOHC or put it all into a B16...that's a lot of cash for 40hp...

Im kinda favoritive of the D myself.... and a couple hundred $$ will make your D perform like a B. A B16 swap isn't a bad idea though. It all depends on how far you want to go with your car in the end. Are you building a MONSTER, or are you just building something fun to drive?
I would personally freshen up the D completely, while I was in there go with a higher compression piston/better connecting rod, mild cam, cam gear, heavier head parts, better performing clutch/flywheel combo, ....basicly a mild NA motor with a good tune that I could drive everyday.

No monster, just a fun everyday car. What I really want is a car that gives that noticeable aggressive cam switchover like the type-r and is quick. Hey, also I read in my haynes manual that the 1.6 vtec motor should say vtec on it...mine just says honda. It's the SI del sol model...is that just a fluke?

your straight if it has a d16z6 under the hood..... the canadian produced d16z6's had a centered "H" emblem that said honda under it. The japanesse models have the valve cover pictured in the hanes manual. the none v-tec D's had that same logo but it was offset to the left.

notice i said for ALL MOTOR a b is better. personally i like dirty d series myself. but if this guy wants all motor than he must go either b, h ,k. an all motor d will not be that quick. hell the best d series has 127horse so thats like 100ish to the wheels. after all the boltons and high comprssion and bigger cams i doubt that thing will even put down 150whp. with a b16 and some minor boltons you could make 160whp no problem, the b18(gsr) will make more. all motor you must go b or better

BLANCO to the fuggin' rescue....I couldn't have said it better.

For one.....hes NOT building a monster....but something fun to drive with an aggressive v-tec change over....READ for gods' sake!!!! One of the larger motors would be great if he was out to set records with the damn thing..but hes not gonna do that with $2500. So "NOTICE" what he said pertaining to the swap idea...." $2500 is alot to spend for 40hp....."

Sure if he had future plans to go big then yeah.....go B,H,K...hell he could go F...... But BLANCO will tell you that $2500 could build a turbo D that would be good for 300hp , and that includes buying the turbo components too!!!

Going NA with a D compared to the other "swap", sure the others will make more power...but not if all your money was spent on the engine.

MRTTurbo; Do what you want to man, if you wanna swap, then SWAP!! It will make your car fun to drive and you'll see that aggressive change-over. But you can do it with a D too. If you want to keep your D, it won't make your car worse or a piece of shit. But I'll leave you with this....even if you screw your D up, you can find another one in no time for $100-$400 ,chocking up the wheels of one of these "swap-wagons" that ain't running rightyet or they're gonna need the money to buy the right axles, or the right ECU,or the right tranny, engine harness.....you see where I'm goin' with this? Even the guys that have swapped over and over again will still be trashing there perfectly good D's 'cuz they don't want them anymore. Either Idea isn't a bad one, it all depends on your skill level and what you want the completed project to be. Sit down and plan either route/idea out on a piece of paper and factor in EVERYTHING!! Are you doing the work or do you have to pay labor? how much down time you have for this car? Parts you need/want? just think it out and get mack to us.

I'd go staright z6 to save on complication..... Just taking the head and block to a macine shop and have them decked to get rid of any warpage will raise compression. If you have the machine shop do the complete rebuild on the for you (parts and all will set you back about $350) they will normally give you a 3 angle valve job at next to nothing! (+$15-$20)

Yeah, but you're also getting almost 20 ft/lb more torque out of it as well, and you can later play with the internals to get even more hp out of it.

    Friggin' gospel BLANCO....

Im sorry, he should have said " ....$2500 is alot to spend on 40hp and 20 flbstq "
Are you saying if he goes with the D, he CAN NOT play with the internals in it later?
And don't chime in with the " it will cost more to make power with the D then it will with a B" story. Sure on the track when then engines are backed with cubic bucks instead of cubic inches, and are being maxed out, I'd agree with you. But not in this case. $2500 in the D16Z6 he already has in comparison to a B-swap that will tap his wallet out, The D+$2500 beats the B all day long. The only perk to the B is the fact he can build the dog out of it later. Which you would have allready done with your D.

a whopping 135whp wow, what does the z6 engine max out at all motor like 150whp. d series are horrible for all motor apps. if he said he wants to turbo i would have said build the d and turbo it. but he said all motor and the b is far better for all motor. not to mention it will most likely resond better to boltons and has more potential. im not bashing a d series i do like them but not for an all motor car.

No...... you prove that its NOT going to be cheaper to build a D to smoke a B then it would be to swap a B in its place.
Let me put it to you like this..... go to d-series.org and look for yourself. There are plenty of guys with DD N/A Dseries that are pulling the same times as my s2000! (14.1) Im making around 200whp and have the advantage of an LSD and RWD. These guys can do it on less money then hes got to put up ($2500)

This thread is pissing me off... I think I might build the ol' ladies Dseries just to prove it.
