Ok, so why in the world does my Civic automatically turn on the a/c whenever I turn the climate controls to defrost? Is there any point to this?
 
yes, a/c conditions the air by removing humidity/moisture from it, the defroster is usually applied to remove condensation from said windshield, so the a/c helps remove the moisture from the air..
 
what about when they are all iced over???

then instead of just blowing warm air on it you're blowing warm DRY air...

buy a scraper?!?
