:hmm: Ok so I'm trying to help my next door neighbor set up his dial up internet and was having a hell of a time dealing with verizon. Finally after talking to the third "Davids" supervisor I was able to set up his account online as the billing department is not open. (Seems like every time I call a call center in India I get a "David".) Anyways we finally get his computer set up and it says connected but we cannot pull up any web pages. After testing to see if there is a connection he says that the problem is with internet explorer and that I need to call a local technician to come fix the problem. So I hang up, call BS and call them back and am basically told to quit calling them and that I was told already its not their problem, its the internet explorer on the computer. Is there an easier way? I mean shit...its dial up!

Well, first of all thats unacceptable customer service. The customer is always right. I would make a complaint to the manager or some one hire or email a letter to Verizon. Second, why dial up? Only thing out there? Broadband is down to 12.99 a month if you have SBC or some other service
    .
Anyway, to fix IE, just reinstall it with Windows disc. Better yet, download Firefox from somewhere, and upload it via pen-drive, disc, etc and install it.

To make sure it set it up right, go to control panel. network connections. create new network via left panel window. Choose connect to internet and have ISP name, dial numbers, and user pw/sn. All the bundle crap thats in the software is just shit anyway.

Last thing to check is the modem. Make sure its not FUBAR. Go to "my computer" then right click somewhere and go to hardware. Check devices and make sure there isnt a yello exclaimation mark. That means something wasnt installed right. And see if you have the modem working.

If all else fails, check other computer that has modem working with dialup. If that doesnt work, Verizon fucked you over.

I will see if he has the original start up disks for his computer...probably not though; and yeah dial up is the only thing out there besides satelite internet and he doesnt want to do a 1 year contract.

verizon dial up is easy but most of the phone techs dont know how to do it right.

since i work for verizon ill walk you through it and make sure we get it right.

the user name HAS TO BE (I dont care what billing or the phone tech says) HAS TO BE!!! vz/res****** if its vz/[yourverizonemail] it WILL NOT WORK. It might work for a few seconds, but it wont stay working.

so, user name is vz/res****** (if you dont have that name, call tech support, give them your phone number and address, they will give you that res user name) and the password is your normal verizon e-mail password.

ultimately youll setup a dialer (in the network connection wizard) and then that is your user name and password.

Billing should have given you the right telephone number. after that its Customer Hardware. Youre modem is effed, your browser is corrupt, something like that.

No... The area we live in doesnt have high speed anything. Dial up internet is the only option besides satelite internet.

If you have a ping reply, then you are connected to the internet.
    Use FTP to download firefox?

Make a new txt file on the desktop called ftp.txt and put this in there:
    save it and exit

then go to Start->Run type "cmd"
    type "cd desktop"
    then type
    "ftp -s:ftp.txt"

    yay

Ok I will see if he wants to do this...I mentioned it to him and he said he wants to stick to internet explorer. Maybe I could do this and then reinstal IE after he is able to get online?

Somehow get FF so you can download and run Kaspersky, after that you can delete FF and he can still use IE.
Burn kaspersky to a CD and bring it to his house if you can, will speed up the process.
It's not going to erase IE, it will clean it up and allow it to run though.

Well dammit...since my neighbor still hasnt got his computer back yet, I decided to install dial up also. Well guess what...it doesnt work on my computer either. Pretty much the same problem he was having with his computer, but according to Verizon, its a problem with my computer. Well now what the hell...2 separate computers? This is BS. My wife spent 2 hours on the phone with them yesterday for them to tell her it is IE or we need to take the computer to a shop. So we called a shop Here in town and they said it sounds like a network card issue. I say BS since it was working just fine at my last house.

Oh and can anyone tell me how to do the ping test again...I cant remember. thanks.

Because I dont want to have to sign a year contract and buy the equipment as well. It doesnt seem like a very good deal for the price.
