So I'm sheeting a roof today. 3/12 pitch on a 2nd story, over a 1st story with a similar 3/12 pitch. Lots of frost on the white wood we just hung. I'm wearing my skate shoes, as they're ideal for walking on plywood, but there is no ply wood yet, just the white wood. As I'm leaning over to shoot the first piece of pretty board(yeah he skimped hella), I lost my footing.

I ended up falling off the roof, hit a parapit wall on the lower roof, spun around and landed on my face at the bottom. Yeah I got up immediately. Gasped for wind once or twice, and I guess I grabbed my hat and collected myself for like 2 seconds. Went back to work. Or atleast that's what I remember. No I didn't hit my head, or atleast I don't remember doing so.

As this happened, the co-worker heard me scream, hit then hit again. He is looking for me, and well he found me under the bottom eve, and I was punching the ground when he first saw me. My head didn't touch a thing, as I can tell.

But now my back is fucking killing me. I can't breathe for shit, and 11/hr cash is not worth this. I want a fucking raise.

20 minutes later, I'm carrying a few sheet, and step on the pre-existing roof that was hung a few days ago, and the plywood seemed a bit bouncy. too bouncy. I found myself arm pit deep in plywood hanging in another roof.

I'm so accident prone its unbelievable.

Earlier this week, we're setting I-Beams on another house. I'm prying on this bar with my hammer, but from my angle it didn't want to go. It's real close to me, so this other guy takes out his forged stilleto and starts beating it at me. Sure enough he fucking hit me in the forehead. Didn't knock me out, but shit I saw stars I guess and I was throbbing in a few hours. Yeah didn't slow me down, 5 minutes later I was lifting the I-Beam.

    [/end rant of constuction dangers]

I just wanted to get this on paper because a lot of shit is going through my head, and 3 accidents in one week is bad, especially for doing this aside from going to schol.

Look for another job. I don't know what $11 an hour looks like in your area, but I wouldn't do it. I help a friend out occasionally, but not on a 3/12. No way. I'll do a 4, deepest, and that's with the platforms attached.

I fell off a roof once (I was playing basketball, long story) and into a gravel driveway. I hurt for a long time.

My last job was in construction for 11 an hour cash, lol. I did it for one year and got messed up a few times myself. Nowadays, money is everything... I knew it wasn't a safe job, but paychecks are paychecks. I'd recommend searching for a business that you have room to grow in. That's where I'm at now, but I'm thinking of quitting, taking school more seriously, and get a part time job =P. Either way, be careful. I'm guessing you don't have insurance?

thats why in the insurance industry, roofing contractors work comp rates are through the roof, no pun intended... and its a bitch to find a market who will wright it the right way... I make a lot of money off of your current industry, you can find safer work for 11 bucks an hour...

be careful and polish that resume

Oh I know. I still fell off the fucking barge. YOu can't do shit about that. 1.5" to stand on is 1.5" to stand on no matter what roof you're sheeting.

But yeah, its 11 after taxes. I think near 15 before taxes. This is what I do. Construction is my game. I know this well. I make seroius money on the weekends doing side shit. This was just a little remodel we had going for two weeks, but shit. I'm a full time student, this is just what puts food on my plate and cash in my pocket for my bike/car/house while I go to school.

Yeah 11 after tax blows, but compared to my buddies who take home 600 a month, while I pull in 2k, its a big difference. It just I think I need a raise. I've been doing this for a while, I have my own tools, and I'll probably get my own compressor next month. And falling on my back fucking hurt.

    fuck. I want more money.

Never fell off a roof, slid down some, rode a couple sheets to the ground though. When you sign on, it's just part of the job.
After being in this industry since I was in diapers, one thing I've learned....

The big money comes when you own your business.

    You won't stand on a 3/12 pitch, but a 4/12 pitch? Im confused because a 4/12 is steeper than a 3/12...
