k20 timing belt

My friends with the 02 SI, broke his timing belt i think this afternoon. I haven't got to see the car yet, but from what he has told me i think this has happened. He has the k20a3 he says it will turn over but it just sounds like the starter is turning and thats it. Do the pistons hit the valves if this happens with one of these motors?

it can. but they use a chain not a belt

i had read that about the timing chain somewhere before but it slipped my mind. I knew the f22c uses one, but wasn't completely sure about the k. well thank you for the info. we just put the trans in his car, and now we have to do the motor, or at least the head. is there a way to check to see if it bent the valves without removing the head?
