Are there any problems with transplanting a newer ( anywhere from 1992-200?) b16a vtec engine into a 1988 civic? Are major changes to wiring harness needed (other than the normal conversion from non-vtec to vtec). Is there a special ECU that I need to buy? How hard is this swap (can I do it on my own, with little knowledge of cars, or do I need to pay someone to do it)? Thanks for your help, im a newb at this.

p.s. what year/model axles will I need to use a b16a hydro tranny in an '88 civic?

short answer no, it will be a nightmare your car is non-VTEC, cable clutch. depending on which model you have you will have to rewire it.
unless your trying to prove a point, and have the money to back it up.
I would suggest going with an older model b16 sir 1. or for the easiest swap go with a zc, you can even use your stock tranny.
