It is a dune buggy, kinda 
The original designer of the Fiberglass dune buggy, Bruce Meyers (And creator of the Meyers Manx) made two other designs: The "Tow'd" which was a completely non-street legal fiberglass buggy, and the SR (Street Racer). All are based on VW floorpans. This one has a hardtop, snap-in windows and papercutter doors. IF you were lucky, you got to move over the firebox heater too.
These weren't really "kits". Bruce made them first, and he made them throughout. So these are real cars.
