My friend blew his Mercury's motor....

I'm not going to research this very much, so if you know just tell me. Otherwise it'll get a stock motor.

Will the SHO V8 fit in the V6 merc? I shouldn't say fit, more "bolt in" without too much extra work.

And will the v6 trans work with the SHO?

SHO motor is from a 97 Taurus 3.4 V8 SHO, he has a 96 Mercury Sable 12V 3.0 V6. I was under the impression they were the same chassis, but I don't know jack shit about these cars.

I think the biggest problem would be will that tranny take the power out of the SHO? I'd be interested to see this one done.

The kid can probably source an SHO trans if he needs to. But he wanted to keep it as cheap as possible.

I honestly think the car is a piece of junk and really isn't worth the time we're going to put into it. He has his opinions and I said I'd help him out.

I suggested if he's going to take the time to do the swap he might as well get a 5 Speed from the older SHO's and convert it to manual. I' not sure if this would work though.

itll work, you have to do everything from a normal swap, but as far as "bolting " it in, it will fit

Being a huge fan of the SHO I thought I would weigh in on this. I am sure the V8 SHO engine would fit in the Sable, quite a few people have done it actually. However..... I am wondering why he is doing this. I understand he needs a new engine but if he is putting this one in for more power, why not go with the 3.0L V6 SHO instead?? He would gain more power. Lots of people have done this as well. I agree that it is probably a waste of time and money but whatever trips his trigger.

he's probably getting a killer deal on the engine.

I would imagine you'd need the SHO transmission and mounts, but I think it would drop in.

By the way, what SHO "V8" are we talkng here ? You're sure it's not the SVO V8 ?

Well I'll be damned.. the 3.4 was a V8 ?

well its been my experience that you can put just about any engine into a rwd without much fuss as long as you have a tranny that will bolt to the engine. If you are a mediocre welder it shouldnt be too hard to make new mounts if they arent there. The old tranny brace should work too. Personally i would check the SHO boards and see what those guys say...im a chevy/honda guy.

Yea, I'll check it out..

but yes the V8 SHO is a 3.4L V8 with 235 hp 235 lbs of TQ.

The v6 SHO's were in OBD1 cars. I think he wants to keep it as simple as possible so the obd2 v8 SHO would be easier I'd assume.

I think all he'd need is the motor and trans ([trans comp]if he opted for it), ECU, wiring harness and motor accessories (A/C, Alternater and whatnot).

I told him to just put the 24V V6 in it and be happy, but he's stubborn and think's his Sable is the shit and wants it to be at least semi quick. I also think the trans will slow him down a lot but whatever floats his boat, he's sourcing the parts, I'm just helping him out it in.

i totally didnt see what year sable that was...1996...isnt that FWD...GAG!!

Sorry...FWD V8s do that to me.

Edit again...OMG...they are all FWD...What was Ford thinking. For some reason when i think Mercury i think Grand Marquis, and i automatically assume all those damn cars are RWD....thats horrible....almost as bad as the New Impala SS being FWD.

Why doesn't he just get the Taurus 3.0 SHO engine from an 88-94 SHO? Less weight, those came with 5 speeds even.

edit: But I don't see why they wouldn't fit, might have to make some mounts and do the wiring, but the 88-94s are roughly teh same size.

Hell, I've seen someone put a SHO 3.4 V8 into an Escort, without even chopping up the firewall.

Yep...all FWD.

He would have to convert the motor to obd2 if he used the 3.0 V6 SHO. I honestly am not sure if it's worth it. But researching it slightly, the v6 SHO is a lot cheaper and I'll suggest to to him. But he said he was getting a good deal on it.

The v8 puts out 95 hp and 55 ft lbs TQ more then the V6 he had in it. The v6 SHO put out 75 hp and 30 ft lbs. more.

drop a ford 305 in it and call it a day lol..whoa new reply box when did we get these?

well for one the SHO motor is made by Yamaha. second of all, im sure you will need the tranny too as since its a different motor, its gonna have a different tranny than the normal Taurus/Sable tranny.

heres some info on the 3.0L v6 SHO motor that will help ya out: http://home.pon.net/hunnicutt/SHOpage.htm

a Taurus SHO performance parts place: http://www.cincysho.com/

another SHO place: http://www.superhighoutput.com/

hell just type in Ford Taurus SHO in google and you will get a crap load of links. i hope i helped some.

The SHO engines were put together by Yamaha in Japan. The blocks are a Ford casting.

I still would go with the V6, they are faster than the v8's (well a stock v6 compared to a stock v8 sho, the v6 wins)and if he is going to go through the trouble of all that work he should get the most bang for his buck. Plus it is cheaper..... Also, the v6 SHO's and probably the v8's did have a different tranny. Really good one too btw. The engine/tranny setup was supposed to be able to outlast the body if cared for correctly. I can attest to that with my car, has all new body parts cause the other ones were completely gone and the engine still runs like a champ. Low miles though. Supposedly they can last 300k np. HOWEVER...... being a sho owner myself I must warn him, the 1st gen engines are badass, but you can't find parts for em. For example, I need a new radiator fan motor for mine atm. Well, you can't buy the motor itself, you have to buy the whole assembly, so it's almost $400. I believe you can't buy new oil pumps/water pumps for them at the moment either. A lot of stuff can be had from SHOshop, but they are a ripoff. Hell almost all SHO sites are a damn ripoff. Like they charge $500=$600 for a fiberglass cowl hood?? You can get a carbonfiber hood for most cars for cheaper than that. I'm not real familiar with the v8 SHO's but before he gets either engine he should do his homework and see which one is going to be better suited, aftermarket parts wise, to his needs. Hell, I had my SHO for sale a while ago for $3k. No takers and since I've got 12k invested in it I decided to store it for a few years, see if it becomes collectible.

We'll he's a dreamer. He's been talking about it forever but didn't do it. Now he has a reason to put the SHO motor in it. Then I can almost guarentee it will stay stock. He thinks internet based businesses are scams, so he refuses to buy anything online. There are no Ford Performance shops that I know of in the Poconos either.

If you're doing an insane project, don't expect the locals to help you do it.

I've always said that.

Imagine me, spending zillions of dollars making my EW4 into a powerhouse, when I could have swapped and been done with it.
