looks like they set a glass on 2 coasters with a birthday candle between it.

i dunno why it does what it does, but its hella cool.
 
i've heard about cutting a grape in half and putting it in the microwave for a sparks show...
but nothing like this candle trick
 
i've heard about a similar thing with a candle, toothpick and a glass. Something about plasma arcing, not sure about the whole story though. For some reason I think cel might know something about it
 
I've done this plenty of times with the toothpick method, but just using a candle is much simpler, dunno why I didn't think of that. :)

Something the video forgot, remember to put a glass of water in the corner of the microwave when you do this or you'll overheat the magnatron pretty quickly.

Basically what happens is that the carbon made from burning the candle or toothpick has the neat ability to reflect microwaves. That reflection creates intense heat which in turn makes the effect you see in the vid.
