ok. last night, when i closed my browser, i noticed a couplea shortcuts on my desktop that werent there before. 'virtual girl' and 'the doctor'. i was like wtf? so i deleted them. now, when i try to connect to the internet, my username and password (which are saved) show up different, and the number is a big long weird number (instead of the normal 10-digit dialup number). i changed the username, password, and number, and it worked fine. but when i restart my computer, everything is back like it was. i downloaded spybot S&D, and it didnt change anything after i ran it.

i also use bazooka, but that will only notify you of a malicious file, then gives you instructions via their website to edit your registry to remove the bad files...

open up a dos window and type in format/s

make sure you have a system disk in drive A

stop going to porn sites
stop installing active x controls.

IE is too dangerous to use anymore.

Check your add/remove programs section, see if anything has been added that doesn't look right. Also, right click one of those shortcuts and view the properties... see where the files are and go from there, Nix whatever files are in that directory. Check your 'startup' folder under your start menu as well. Check your registry for any keys relating to the directory those programs were in as well as any of the file names in that directory. Delete all of them.

Update Spybot with it's update feature, then check again.

i know how to fix this

go to IE, click tools then internet options

go to the connections panel and change your default to your dialup ISP. delete the other connections, unless you recognize them. probably going to say something like "dialer'.

i ran bazooka, and it detected something called 'explorer.exe' in my system32 folder. 'explorer.exe' had a blank icon, was created last night, and just had bad karma in general. I restarted in safe mode and deleted it.

Problem seems to be fixed. Thanks guys.


and I didnt (to my knowledge) download any active x controls. but I've had it. I'm fucking downloading mozilla.

I reformatted my Aunt's old virus and spyware ridden K6-2 500 a while back. I disabled direct access to IE with the new 'Set program access and defaults' option and installed Mozilla. She and my cousins know absolutely nothing about computers and they have yet to have a single problem with spyware or viruses. Before disabling IE I would be over there every few weeks removing spyware and viruses and generally cleaning up the system.

Internet Explorer is the single biggest problem with Windows there is. It's still tied in with the OS, but even by just disabling access to the browser, the OS becomes quite stable and usable.

explorer.exe is the windows shell...

i sense a format in your future. explorer.exe = WINDOWS EXPOLRER, not INTERNET EXPLORER

the 'explorer.exe' that's the windows shell is located in C:\Windows, not C:\Windows\System32.

and bazooka doesn't delete ANY files.


also, since i've deleted explorer.exe from the system32 directory, the problem has ceased.

bazooka would have detected a dummy file. not the original.

Yeah, most viruses or spyware will have a name similar to a system file to try to confuse people.
