If the dolphins already picked Jake Long with the #1 pick and have a contract, why does anybody have to draft? why not just sign and pick everybody before the draft and the highest bidder gets the picks. i know we are supposed to have a draft so the worst teams get the top picks, but i don't understand this. they do this every year.

same reason they draft in every pro sport

to keep the best talent going to the worst team. It's financial security, someone has to win and someone has to lose, but if one team losses over and over with no hope in sight then fans will lose interest the team will go bankrupt. Now that team can't play and every team who had them scheduled has a hole in their schedule which further burdens the league.

not having a draft would be like trying to divide by zero, please refer to my signature

it doesn't make sense though if you can sign a contract before the draft. or do they not actually have a signed contract and they just have the deal done?

I doubt that they can legally sign it before the offical draft selection, unless they've post dated the contract. Getting the deal done early is a big deal for Rookies who draft early. Jamarcus Russell, a Quarterback who went to Oakland last year, spent so much time in negotiations that he missed half his season (because you can't practice until the deal is done).

they could, but Miami could change their mind at any moment and the whole ball of wax starts over

If I were Miami I'd pick Chad Henne, Brian Brohm, or John David Booty, you can have the best line in the world and Lemmon isn't going to win you games

yeah, but those guys WILL be available in the 2nd-3rd rounds. miami can pick up a good lineman, they have a good running back, a couple guys on defense and a qb and be a .500 team within 2-3 years.

he's risky though. he might want to bounce and go play for the braves.

so i was watching espn last night and they discussed this a little bit. the rams asked the league if they could start contract talks with the #2 pick. the league said no, but it's obvious who the rams are taking (as in the team has decided).

i think choosing and signing the #1 pick is purely for show and to draw attention. the league never anticipated signing the #1 by tuesday and leaving so much time for another pick. essentially the nfl didn't think ahead when allowing such an endeavor.

    check it.

I know its truth and rumors. But we need a strong blocking TE. He is getting old though.

ahhh, i was confused. you said to "trade up for shockey" so i was thinking someone in college.

i would like to see him come over. we need a blue collar type of guy. if we could get 3 good years out of him, it would be worth it.
