So I'm thinking about getting rid of the Accord this summer. I'm probably gonna get about 1000 out of it, since it's a transportation special, pretty beat up, and runs like a champ, and it's got 240 on the clock. So I was thinking maybe trading the 240 on the clock for a 240sx? I know there are a few Nissan folk on here, and was wondering what the reliability of these things is. Hows the ins? Gas mileage? Just trying to figure out if this is a good idea or not.

insurance isnt' too bad. gas mileage is decent. about 25mpg average. but thats on easy driving. you wont get quite that much.

most these days are pretty beat up or modded too hell. if you can get a really clean one for about $2500, you are doing good.

oh, and i've owned 4 of them. lol

i think B had one for a little while. many other guys on here have too.

25 isn't that bad. I'll have to check up more on the insurance. But how reliable is just a stock motor, with little to no mods.(IE CAI, Exhaust, etc) Also theres one on CL that has a welded differential. What the hell is that?

the stock motor is strong as shit. sometimes the timing chain will go bad, but not too often.

a welded diff is the rear differential. basically someone wanted lsd and didn't want to pay for it. it makes both wheels spin at the same time.

Yes, every turn you take you will be scrubbing your tires across the pavement.

no, it's a ricer way to make your car driftable. well, it's driftable anyway, but for those who want lsd, it's easier than paying for it. it just locks the rear end so both wheels always spin. as opposed to a true lsd that activates when a wheel loses traction.

    no, you are overthinking this.

google "how stuff works" and put in 'limited slip differential"

it just makes both wheels get power instead of a one wheel peel.

I've done a fair bot of work on 240's. My roommate has a 97' KA-T build making 408 whp and 390 torque. The thing hauls ass. I DD a 99 Maxima myself, and have owned a 96', and a 93'. You can say I've dealt plenty with 90's Nissans.

I can attest that while their platforms tend to be more geared for performance compared to Honda's, the build quality, reliability, parts cost, and ease of working on cannot touch a Honda. If anything rusts more than an eg civic, it's a 90's nissan. The manual transmissions seem like junk to me (not so durable and crappy shifting).

The ka24 is an awesome engine. It will last the life of the car. Before boost, my roommate got around 26 on the highway.

    350Z cough cough.

Yes you will have more tire wear with a welded rear end, when tuning both tires are forced to rotate at the same speed causing one side to slide, not only do you wear down the tire but also traction is limited since one tire is pretty much not being used 100%

If its a drifting car then its fine. If you plan on driving it a lot on the street I'd swap it out for a real LSD

They won't rape you, stuff just won't be as cheap as it used to be. The key is rust. Check for rust in all the 240 rust prone areas. Around the hatch, and rockers come to mind.

if you get a bone stock 90's nissan, you'll be fine. they drive forever. it's when you start modifying them. just like any car, build it right and they are good.

parts are usually really cheap because everybody has a wrecked one sitting around.
