Transmission Problems...

My car has 182 thousand miles. I just put in a new clutch and a clutch cable, but now when i step on the clutch it feels hard. I can go into all the gears with no problem, but when i'm on 1st gear at 3 thousand RPMs i can't go into 2nd. Why?
Also...How can I know the level of my gear fluid? How do I pour gear fluid into my 1990 Honda Civic-5 speed? Can someone help?
