transmission/shifting problem need help

Here is what happened.. i was driving today and shifted into 5th gear and all of a sudden my shifter went crazy....i pulled over and turned th car off then tried to shift into first i noticed the that the track or h shaped path that you are supposed to follow is all messed up because i can move the shifter around in big circles. i was able to get going and get home but can not get into 5th gear or reverse... can someone please tell me what the problem is?
