I was thinking that I might do some work to the rex after student loans pay out. If I install some CTR cams would I need to upgrade my springs/retainers and ECU as well?
I'm kinda on a budget, I want to do something when I get some ready cash and thought the cams would be a good start.

you don't 'need' the springs and retainers as long as you stick with the stock redline. However, those cams make power till 8500-8800 rpms so to take full advantage you'll want to get ITR/CTR springs and retainers or better, I.E. Skunk2, Crower, ECT...

I read that it's recommended, I dont know if I will have enough to do it all at the same time.
I will be starting a high performance engine machining program, so honing, p&p, and balancing will be free. just wondering where to start mt parts collection fo the big rebuild next year, and I hope not to mess anything up before then.

Then don't touch your motor at all. I know it's hard to do but trust me, you'll thank yourself later. Just wait until your good and ready to do ONE really nice build.

I would suggest installing upgraded valve springs with the cams. The main reason being that the Type R cams have an additional 1mm of lift and I don't know that I would trust a stock single valve spring with that amount of lift. Honda used dual valve springs for a reason. However, a lot of people have used the stock springs and had no problems as well so it's up to you in the end.

If you're going to get all that kind of work for free I would wait as well. Although you can change the cams & valve springs with the head on, if you're going to p&p the head and such you might as well wait until you pull it off to do that to change the cams & valve springs.

thanks for the advice, I think I will buy the parts I can and wait to install them when I get everything I need.

not sure but i think the newer heads switched to dual springs on one side. i have been running itr cams in my gsr head with no problem, i rev to 8 k max though but if i were going beyond that i would upgrade.

GSR has dual springs on the intake side, but I'm not sure with the B16. My Sir1 B16a has single springs all around, but the newer ones might be different.
