vtec doesn't work

this had been the car from hell. its just one problem after another. when i first dropped the gsr motor into my civic the vtec kicked in everytime right at 5500 rpm. then it stopped working. then it would work again. it was on and off for about a week, and now i havent heard the sound of my vtec in well over a week. oil pressure is fine. the light isnt on and there is plenty on the dipstick. the wireing looks fine, but i doubt it would be the wiring becuase it was goign back and forth between working an d not working. if it was the wireing it would just stop and not work again til the wire was fixed. any ideas? bad vtec solinoid?

clean the screen out on the vtec silinoid it's probly clogged and change your oil

this is probably a stupid question but do i just take the solonoid off and the screen is right there?

yes the screen will be there, when you take the solenoid off. You should also check your wiring. Make sure there are no places where bare wire would touch anything. The fact that vtec was intermittent, suggests a possible problem with the wiring.
