if you frequently install and uninstall programs, windows like to clutter up your registery. also install and uninstalling hardware contributes to the clutter because of drivers. with that said, i like to reinstall windows at least every other year to get a clean start.

i back up all the data and just reinstall with a image of windows that i create with every build. with the builds, i install all the drivers and programs, keeping them minimal.

lastly, as mentioned, i like to use diskeeper and ccleaner to maintain the files.

you can get a 'dope' machine for 299 these days. 4gb ram, 1tb hard drives, win7, etc etc. watch staples flying for sales.

Delete all but your latest restore point? all the restore points will eat you're hd like a fucking zombie on human flesh!

as b stated, even today's "basic" computer is 90% competent in what most users do.

desktop ranking
1) ultra budget under $300 = AMD athlon ii x2 or x3s
a) perfect for everything except moderate gaming or anything a/v multithread related)
2) budget less than $600 = AMD athlon ii or phenom ii x4s
a) the happy medium that does everything well.
3) gaming or "advance" $700 to $1000 = Intel i5 7xx, i7 9xx/8xx, i5/i7 25/26xx (best)
a) will do everything really well, about %20-30 faster than AMDs fastest depending.
4) enthusiast $1000+ = Intel i5 7xx, i7 9xx/8xx, i5/i7 25/26xx (best)
a) the fastest thing money can buy is Intel extremes and new i7 2600k

for notebooks, its very similar landscape.

one thing to consider is if youre integrated graphics isnt amd 4xxx HD or intel 2/3xxx HD or higher, its strongly recommened to get even a cheap dedicated card so you can off load a majority of flash and HD content to it for hardware acceleration.

my routine.

fresh install
install all current updates and programs/games i want
make system image
dont fuck with it

if anything happens ill just re-image it. 20 mins tops.

i cant make periodic fresh installs on my HTPC though, itll wipe out my DRM and i wont be able to watch my 500+GB of HD recordings. fuck you M$

so i found i had a shitload more music and movies than i thought. and there were some random hidden files i couldn't remember. i guess i tried converting some dvds and storing some others so i could watch when i travel. i'll have to mess with it more tonight, but things should start working better.

C: 13 of 139gb remain.
you hard drive being chock full of gay porn is def killing you
i don't know what the industry recommends but i like to keep em down to about 50% capacity
when you start having to delete things to add other things, you're fucked

right click my computer and hit properties
whats your version of windows, CPU chipset, and memory size
give specifics on the CPU and i'll look up the bench test rating

it's not gay porn, it's she-male porn. there's a difference.

i just have a shit ton of music and a few movies on it. i just think i started duplicating files in different locations and it's dragging ass. how would i find that info?

couldnt agree more and my routine for all builds for family and friends. except, i like to "fuck with it" and reinstall the image annually.

the only thing i would add is, with the prices of HDDs, there is no reason not to run a RAID 1 if you really value ur data.

I run a mozy.com unlimited account. It backsup off-site twice a day for my file areas/etc. When/if shit hits the fan, I re-set myself up with a format or new machine/etc and go prepare my download at mozy, and all my files can be downloaded within an hour as a zip, or they will burn/mail a dvd for a small cost. it's $5 a month, and thats worth it to me for some of my stuff like my pictures/etc work stuff, that i can't simply ever get again (ie, music).

Even if my house burns down.

Unless your storing your backups off site, you are still a single point of failure in disaster recovery.

No doubt about that. I am going to be building myself a new desktop rig in the next few months and will be using something like Mozy or Carbonite on top of burning two sets of DVDs of pictures/movies storing one in my 'fire proof' safe and storing a copy at my parents place.

agreed^^ can never have enough of a back up of a back up. no data medium last forever.

but i dont have anything that "precious" yet, so a RAID 1 is good enough for me.
