Most of them don't stand for anything. They are just for sake of translation between many countries. Every car has numerical/letter designations in case the name doesn't work or does not apply toward thier target market. Z-cars/ Fairlady for example.
 
No shit, this applys to all of the designations. That was just an example.
If it's not a question of letters and numbers, what does Type-S mean? Difference between Type-R and Type-S, in literal meaning, not what it represents on the car. No one knows because it doesn't have any literal importance, consequently, no translation problems-like I said. Anyway, that is how it was explained to me when I worked for Honda.
