I dont think that the headgasket alone would allow smoke to come out the intake plentum. Do a compression test on all cylinders, sounds like you might have an intake valve(s) not seating correctly which would explain the smoke coming out the ram-air-intake. Then check your headgasket...
<_< Ok, I guess nobody read his question. YES! You can use the 1.5 motor to replace your blown 1.6 motor. Just swap the manifolds and distributor and everything is exactly the same!
