Nah its black.. like oil. I don't think its coolant. But any other suggestions.. I'll try the water and soap.. anything in particular I should stay away from? Don't wanna get the wrong thing wet y'know

I see some oil on the transmission every time I pop the hood.. I suspect its leaking from somewhere else and onto the transmission but.. My cousin said he thinks I need a new head gasket. Sound about right? How else can I assess this?
