I would suggest checking your timing belt. If your exhaust is glowing, then it could be your exhaust valves opening up too quick. After that, check your fuel pressure. If you can do what ever you can to get an actual number for fuel pressure. Not a pull the line off and see if its coming out.

When was the last time you checked you valve lash? I had a surging idle, did a valve adjustment and it went away. If the valves are loose, then it would have idle issue. Just a thought.
