Would be cool to see pictures from, let's '97, and see how they compare.
 
Looks like most of those houses were rented anyway. Most actual homeowners would have something planted other than grass. But still...wow
 
The sad part is, there are signs of urban decay in all the "before" pictures too. Things just got even worse. I thought about buying a $500 house, but ultimately I don't think Detroit is ever going to recover.

on the plus side though the trees seem to be taking it back at a rather impressive rate
maybe in a few decades Detroit will be a lush forest
 
Those pictures don't do it justice. That would be a nice neighborhood before and after. I just recently read that the estimated cost of blight removal is $1.5 billion. It's just an insurmountable mess. There are a few beautiful neighborhoods that have historical value, but they are literally one street removed from the ghetto.
