hey guys u have a 1995 ls integra and i plan on going lsvtec just had a quick question is engine removal completely necessary when doing a lsvtec project or is there a way around it? any feedback is appreciated...
Well, that's assuming a straight head swap, no piston/rod swapping. If it's just swapping the head and leaving the internals in place, then yes, there's no need at all to pull the motor. If you're going to be replacing the pistons for after-market or an OEM upgrade or whatever, then you're going to need to pull the engine out.
I would imagine it would be hard as hell removing an engine without a lift, and take forever without air tools. Haha my swap took 2 weeks, 2 hours per day it was my first one, D2D. But now, with access to a lift and hoist and airtools, I can probably do it in a couple hours. I couldn't even imagine trying to get those FUCKING balljoints off without standing under the car to hammer at full force.
I had a cherry picker and didn't use my air tools, since I have only had a 5 gal. tank and it ran out of air way too quickly, it ended up being more frustrating, standing there waiting for the tank to fill every 6 minutes.
hmmm i see but most of the articles ive read say in order to build a "reliable" lsvtec changing the pistons as well as the bolts and hone down the bottom end so i guess engine removal is neccesary then right? or am i wrong
okay.. theres more to it than just throwin a vtec head on... u gotta tap and plug the extra oil whole on the head. cuz the ls block doesnt have it.. if u dont do that you'll have oil all over the place... u gotta also use the ls head gasket.. get the converssion dowel pins.. i would recomend getting a golden eagle ls/vtec converssion kit it comes with everthing u pretty much need...... i would get a type r oil pump, type r water pump or gsr... whatever water pump u go with use that timing belt..
you dont have to remove the motor to replace the rings and pistons... just drain the oil... take off the oil pan, scatter plate and remove the end caps and then tap them out very slowely... i would get arp rod bolts get the jernouls cross hatched, reaplce the rod bearings and new rings... if ur goin N/A dont leave the ls pistons in there get b16 or type r... GSR pistons are like ls pistons.... but if u plan on boosting it then the ls pistons would be fine.. i have closs to 5500 into my ls/vtec.. trust me doing it right the first time will help out alot.... if buildt right it will turn heads... you can pull the whole motor and just completely rebuild it like i did... i did a all oem bearing and gasket replace.... pm me if u have any other questions and ill help ya...
