transmission problem diagnosis

ok so i figure my transmission is messed up but im not really an expert on exactly what is happeneing or what the problem is. all i know is that my Fourth gear won't work 1st 2nd and third are fine but when it shifts into fourth it seems like its in neutral. i have to drive in D3

auto tranny i'm assuming.. if that the case.. 4th is probably gone or on its way out

all i know to do is throw money at it. should i have mechanic fix it or buy a new tranny

you can find an auto tranny for a fraction of the price it would cost to repair it.. but there is still the installation if you cant do it yourself
