True, considering that nobody really owns the rights to Linux except for Linus Torvalds... and even then he designed the OS from the very beginning to be completely open source. What other Linus providers like SCO have done is put their own spin on Linux with a custom kernel/build and sell it as their own system- they don't own Linux. They only own their own product.

SCO used to be Caldera

but yeah Mike right no one owns linux, and when you do buy say redhat or some other flavor, your not buying linux your buying the documentation and the pretty packaging.

Exactly. My little scenario would require the courts to somehow rule that Unix code existed in every distro of Linux (which I don't even think SCO is claiming are they?), maybe deep in the kernel somewhere, and because of that, override the GPL and give SCO (and subsequently Microsoft) rights to everything. I still think someone in Redmond is still secretly wishing for that to happen :)

a while back I few memos from a ceo kinda guy at MS were leaked to the public.
They said something to the effect of "Under no circumstances is anyone to let Linux gain any market share
if you have to give the OS away for free"

and if you live in europe a company that has a monopoly of any market it's illegal for them to drop there prices or give there product away to beat out the competition. So MS is scared they are gonna start having to actually make something that works more than 60% of the time.

ah breaking news. check this Press Release out from Novell.
Which states SCO never owned Unix in the first place. Good ol' Novell, backing the Open source community.
