The mujahideen didn't take over Afghanistan, they were/are just a word for what we then called freedom fighters, and now call insurgents. They were random warlords and tribes fighting foreign occupation, once the war with Russia was over they started fighting amongst themselves, and that's when the Taliban came into power.
