Mother nature will be just fine. Humans will simply make the planet uninhabitable for us. We will die off. The lack of our presence will allow nature to return to form. The world will live on without us.

But until that time... Woooooooooo!!!!!

Laws don't just prevent Darwinism, they also keep assholes from fucking it up for the responsible, forward thinking, nice-to-get-along-with people. You have a daughter for crying out loud; don't you want her to live in a world that's worth living in?

I want her to live in a world where during a natural disaster or crisis, the rules can bend a little so neighbors can help each other out without being punished for it. Laws don't prevent anything, they are for retroactive punishments and that alone. The notion that you can modify social behavior through legislation for the greater public good is a flawed notion that leads a society straight toward totalitarianism. Punish those that actually do harm, not those that might maybe someday possibly could hurt someone, that's fucking stupid.

That idea of a utopia sounds nice. and it could work with many people.

Problem is, people are just too fucking dumb, in general, to be left alone to make these decisions for themselves.

even our forefathers knew that-- that's why they invented the electoral college afterall.

if that van crashed into a bunch of kids and blew up, the law itself wouldn't have stopped it from happening in and of itself... you're right. but perhaps it will help guide morons into NOT doing that in the first place.

If dumb people are left to weed themselves out, society will be stronger because of it. The collateral damage argument is always overly exaggerated: what if that guy crashed into a school bus full of honor students and bounced a tanker of cyanide into the reservoir then rolled onto a power pole that crossed the wires at NORAD launching nuclear icbms...
Yeah yeah ok, your right, I guess texting and driving should be illegal. I never thought of how dangerous it could be

I honestly think people that pay attention and follow rules that are set for their own safety will make society stronger. Not jerk offs that break the rules for their own self interests. Who brings gasoline in a 5 gallon bucket? A fucking idiot. Why are rules created? Because people fucked up too many times.

I'm realizing the more and more you speak you have this notion that you are self righteious, but realistically you're just selfish. You live in a state of isolation both physically and metaphorically and I'm sorry you've been so indoctrinated with the bs that you don't function in an actual society.

I'd LIKE to live there too. But that place doesn't exist. And even I have been known to do stupd things from time to time (ok, all the time) that would probably get myself banned from said utopia.

Frankly, if the law didn't exist, I probably wouldn't know NOT to NOT do that.
So, perhaps a 'law' doesn't necessarily have to be in place for everything, but some general knowledge of stuff needs to be known before hand. gas is probably an easy one, but i assur eyou if you asked 10 people on the street why storing gas in a 5 gallon bucket is a bad idea, 9 of them wouldn't be able to tell you why, perhaps beyond 'because it might start a fire' or something else rudamentary.

Perhaps, then, it's our education system that has failed us. We are a country of fucking morons. If you don't believe me, look at last nights election results where 4 time incumbants who haven't done shit still happened to muster up 85% of the vote in their districts.....

A guy helping his neighbors when the stores are sold out of gas cans.
A fucking idiot. Why are rules created? Because people fucked up too many times.
So now that we have these rules, nobody break them? The burden on taxpayers to enforce all these minutia regulations is worth it because they keep us all safer? How? It's against the rules, but this guy still did it, I still do it.
I'm realizing the more and more you speak you have this notion that you are self righteious, but realistically you're just selfish.
I take offense to that. What have I said that's self righteous? The desire for people to be responsible for the damage they create instead of the risks they take is selfish how? You think you're being benevolent to the public by regulating and restricting behaviors with the flawed reasoning that it will somehow make everyone safer. That is self righteous, letting people define their own righteousness is the exact opposite of your self righteous ideology.
You live in a state of isolation both physically and metaphorically and I'm sorry you've been so indoctrinated with the bs that you don't function in an actual society.

I've lived in your "actual" society (tell me that's not a self righteous condescending tone). And the notion that a tech savvy individual can be isolated in our modern interconnected world is ignorant and arrogant. Your discovery channel notions about how society functions here are laughable. Live both like I have, then talk like you know what you're saying.

so when someone does stupid shit like this and kills one of your friends/family, are you just going to chalk it up to darwinism? i mean he had good intentions right? just trying to help his neighbors! cant be too mad that he just killed someone you love right?!

i think thats the point you're missing here. im not even sensationalizing this. no end of the world scenario. just someone stupid killing a single innocent person as a result of his stupidity, thats not a stretch. its happened plenty of times. its the reason some of these so called "nanny laws" exist.

Yes, I would but I'd also expect the perpetrator to suffer a punishment as his action caused measurable harm to another.

Intent is irrelevant, the damage caused is relevant.

Wait, you're saying it's illegal, against the rules, and it happens anyway? So we need more rules... for? You admit it doesn't work, yet you stand by it. Madness.

I need to carve "Laws≠prevention" into a brick and just walk around bashing people over the head with it until they understand.

i didnt admit it doesnt work. just because one person isnt following the rules (which is inevitable) doesnt mean that the rule's existence didnt stop some other poor soul from doing the same thing.

more people doing stupid shit = more chances of something bad happening
less people doing stupid shit = less chance of something bad happening

no one here thinks that the rules/laws will 100% stop an issue. yet you seem to think that's the reasoning.

Those Homer buckets are made of the shittiest plastic. They break just looking at them. DO not try to stand on one. The gray buckets that you buy paint in those things are strong and do not break open.
All solvent based paints come in metal containers. Those things are tough to break open.

The stupidity of some people is amazing. I guess its good that he wasn't using glass jars.

Gas here is back down to 3.49/gal.

Not great, but I'll take it over $4 every day of the week.

shit, its about 3.09 in nashville.
3.29 to 3.39 in my town, but thats because its full of rich folk who will pay it.

gouging based on demographics is apparently legal.

Same thing happens around here. Depending on the lay of the Ghetto, gas can be base + or - 7cents. I've found the gas stations that are base - 7 cents.

Fuck gas is still 3.87 to 3.97 a gallon on my road. 3.64 at a gas station on my towns border and in Bristol. I love paying more for living in a richer town

It's $3.49 a gallon today. It always goes down Thursday, then back up on Friday (probably to make extra money off people who get paid on Fridays.)
