i am planning on building a ls vtec engine, and i heard that a gsr head will out preform a b16 is this true? how would a b17 head preform compare to a b16 or a gsr head?

The B17 head is basically the same as the B16 head.
The B18C1 head will give you slightly higher compression because of its smaller combustion chambers, and if you use the dual length intake manifold and are able to tune the IM changeover point, you get a fuller torque band through your mid range.
Beyond an increase in compression, the B18C1 head also has larger quench pads which are extremely important in preventing detonation / running cooler and getting more complete combustion.
