To answer your underlying question, there are no real differences:
b18a1 (1990-1991) was obd0
b18a1 (1992-1993) was obd1 with 10 more hp than the obd0 version (some say cam, some say injectors)
b18b1 (1994-1995) was obd1 with a different style intake manifold (still bolts to b18a1)
b18b1 (1996-2000) was obd2a (different injector plugs, different distributor, different alternator plug, more emissions BS)
b18b1 (2001) was obd2b (I think)
All internal Parts are fully interchangable between the engines, as well as most of the external parts.

The only thing that will bolt up like stock is another stock replacement b18a.
you can use your tranny with any b-series, including vtec variants, but it will require wiring and computer work (and finding an automatic vtec computer is difficult)
So you saying like a honda crv engine will fit but I need to get a ecu and cables?
Yes, correct. Any B-series engine will fit, although you already have a B18, so I would not advise swapping down to the smaller B16 as it has less torque than your current engine and your car's auto transmission will NOT be a good match for it.
Your best bet is probably a CR-V B20 engine. That would basically be a bolt-in as long as you use your current engine's accessories. If you want to add VTEC, you can swap a whole motor just swap a VTEC head, but you will need to find an appropriate ECU and get it chipped to run your setup, like Briansol noted.
Is there something wrong with the current engine? You could just add an intake, header, and exhaust and see whether or not you like modding your car. The B18 you already have is not a terrible engine.
