I've done some checking around and from what i can figure (im not too mechanically inclined either) if i did a Frankenstein with the head from a D17a6 onto my D17a1 would that give the same gas figures as the D17a6 found in HX? NOT looking for power gains just better economy with the added vtec-e.....any fault with my logic?
 
No fault there- but you need to have all the electronics from the A6 (I don't know the HX numbers) as well, plus compensate for any change in compression you may or may not have from using a different bottom end.
 
I would think so, but I've never seen one done (never really looked for it either), so I honestly couldn't tell you. For the 7G engines, I'm just going by what makes engineering sense. It's dumb to make two completely different bottom ends- it makes more sense to have a common bottom that both the non-VTEC and VTEC heads can bolt on to.
