arent there 9gb disc?(double sided). how long does it take to burn a whole dvd with current dvd writers?

Um, 1x DVD is alot faster than 1x CD... 4X DVD burners burn at about 5.5mb/sec... That's like 40x cd burning speed :p

you're going to be waiting a long time and as Cal said the plextor burns DVD+R at 8x
and DVD-R at 4x it only takes maybe 10mins or so to burn 4.7GB

The longest part of the process is ripping the DVD you need anyware from 4-6GB of space and at least 2-6hrs of time to rip a DVD to be able to copy it. Software is where the inprovements need to be made.

yes there are double sided 9GB discs.

But as far as I know, they're not burnable quite yet. Drives that can burn double layer media are just around the corner... Makes me feel bad as I just got a 4x DVD+RW burner for Christmas... It'll be outdated in no time! :p

I picked up the lite on DVD -&+R/-&+RW burner at the black Fri. sales at Best Buy for like $75, while I was there I also bought DVD X Copy Gold for $20 after rebates. The burner is 4X DVD +R...4X DVD +RW...4X DVD-R...2X DVD-RW...40X CD-R and 24X CD-RW. I couldn't be more pleased with the combo of DVD X Copy and this burner. I burn an entire DVD in around 45 minutes with the absolute cheapest blank dvd's made (I get them from pricewatch 100 blank silver top dvd's for $44!). Anyways, that's what I use and I love it, who the hell cares about super speed burning when you make a copy while watching cheap burnt porn

any drive should be able to burn double sided media.
you just flip the disc over and burn like any other disc.

there are no 9GB sigle layer discs

You're right, I was mixing up double sided and double layered media. :)

I have DVD X COPY. It's ok. I have like 100 DVD-R's. Shitty part is, I don't copy DVD's because any DVD you have is Dual layer, 9 GB. All you can buy is 4.7 GB. You need at least two discs for every movie, and sometimes three.

Nice part is you can cut out anything you want. I'm waiting for the Dual layered discs, or some better compression software.

There's software out that can fit 9gb movies on 4gb discs... You lose a few things like extra languages and stuff, but there's no perceptable loss in quality.

DVDSqueeze, or something like that comes to mind.. that might not be the exact name, but the software is out there to do just that.
