Is there any way to tell externally (numbers, markings, etc.) whether a transaxle is from a DX or Si Civic......ie: what the final drive ratio is?

Nope. You can only tell what bearing size it uses(IIRC, Si always has big bearing, B000, rest is A000), though here's a method to figure out the FD:
