they flash on and off, but they go pretty high. i could see them all the way to the tops of trees in my back yard.
not sure what kind of lazy fireflies you have in the west.

I've heard and used both terms but definitely tend to use "firefly" more

that might have to do with the 10mph wind that is ALWAYS blowing in off the ocean
hard for most small airborne bugs to manage in that
