What sensor is used to tell the ECU the car is "started"? Or, from what sensor does hondata get it's "Start = X" reading?

The start reading for me always reads off. Durring crank, or running; off. In the example recording w/ Hondalogger, that car's start sensor stayed in the on position. I've got a feeling my engine is ghetto wired on this part. My mechanic hooked a line from the fuse box in the cabin under the drivers side dash ('00 Civic EX) to what looks like the fuel injectors? It runs through that platic sheeth that the wires run from the injectors into. Maybe it goes to they dizzy? It's wired so when my car is in the on position the engine gets power. Do you know what i'm talking about?
