why are you getting a special cutter for that cast iron?
are you planning to salvage what doesn't leak or what?

because it needs to be cut, not chunked out. We're going to cut it just above the leak and replace it with PVC instead of trying to replace EVERY last bit of the Cast iron.

The way part of the bell is built in the wall in the kitchen scares me on how the wall was built on the upstairs, I'd like to rip down another wall (good stress relief) But I don't want holes everywhere right now.

Why not use a sawsall? I just cut a pipe exactly like that one. used 3 blades but got through it. I own a sawsall, so I was out something like $6-8 for the blades. But it worked.

Was your directly between two studs? There's no room to get a giant ass sawzall up where I need to cut at. I rented the chain cutter for 30 bucks today.

I'll be on a ladder, in between the ceiling studs doing this, from what I've been told by several people the pipe will most likely crack/shatter/bust where I just don't want it to.

^^Yup.

Take it easy, we broke the pipe once and had to re-cut. DO NOT hit the pipe with anything.

Who lives there again ?

EDIT: AND MORE WORK TO THE GARAGE

Do NOT disappoint us

Then get your goddamn ass over here and give me some cash to reroof and insulate the garage. It is quite possibly the LEAST of my concerns right now.

An update though, We took a giant hammer to it and busted out the bottom section of the pipe. It's broken, and out. Now for some reason my dad wants to replace the entire T section from where the tub/toilet/sink go into it. *sigh*

So we spent about 3 hours ripping the living shit out of things, pulled the toilet and whatnot.

Fun shit. Steve, bring your tools and money. We'll have the garage done up nicely.

My own garage is getting surgery ASAFP. The office too. But now I have to work on the bedroom.

I have (had) a gas pipe poking out of the wall for some sort of gas lamp from the 30s. I had to push that back into the wall and patch it.

so did you even get to use your fancy cutter?

I can't see the pictures (The ONLY thing my work blocks is photobucket. Everything else, including porn sites, are fine. But woe to thee if you look at photobucket pictures!), but I'm going through a similar job at home now, too. A cold water feed broke in between the upstairs and downstairs bathrooms, and soaked the drywall enough that the downstairs bathroom ceiling turned to mush and came down. The pipe was actually an easy fix, but now I've got 3 walls and a ceiling to re-drywall. :p

No recked, the Sawzall didn't fit between the studs either. My dad took a giant linemans (I think?) hammer to it and busted out a chunk about head height upstairs, and then busted the 90d Bend out of the basement. Two hits and that bend came right off, then broke as it hit the concrete.

So yeah, that pipe cutter was 29.10 well wasted.

Well, I think you're going to have a lot of good things going on when this house is 'done.' The sense of accomplishment will be awesome and I know it will look spectacular. :)

Not to tell you what to do, but I'd suggest pulling up a bit of the flooring and checking to see if the flooring was ruined as well. Water loves ruining subfloor real fast.

My boss just got done re-flooring a big entryway built two years ago because of a bad flashing job another sub messed up.
